The Floating Classroom

The Floating Classroom pilot programme was established by Kristy Northcroft in 2019 under Chris Jolly Outdoors, aimed at linking students to the cultural heritage and the localised curriculum of Taupō moana. The first group to join this initiative was St Patrick's Catholic School, where around 270 students participated in a series of enriching cruises. Despite the obstacles presented by Covid-19 pandemic, Kristy successfully engaged over 3,000 learners through this innovative educational experience. By 2025, Kristy remains dedicated to inspiring and educating in her role as Programme/Cruise Director, further extending the influence and impact of The Floating Classroom with more than 7000 learners to date.

Tū te Pā Harakeke
Weaving
Workshops

Kristy collaborates with subject matter experts to develop programmes that cater to various skill levels. She invites experienced weavers to engage learners in traditional weaving experiences using harakeke (flax), while also sharing insights into its historical and modern uses. This hands-on approach not only enhances learning but also connects participants to the rich cultural heritage surrounding this craft.

Tauhara College

"Our classes had an amazing experience onboard the Floating classroom. Follow up sessions in class showed the amount that was learnt about local Tikanga, including the importance of our maunga and chiefs, especially Ngātoro-i-rangi and Tia. Thank you for the wonderful learning opportunity.

Atawhai Te Kōhanga Reo

Right from the planning stages through to the end you were so easy and amazing to work with.
The opportunity you provided for us to have a kaikōrero who not only knew the history of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, but someone who was also able to deliver this kōrero in Te Reo Māori to uphold our Kōhanga Reo Kaupapa is greatly appreciated.

Arohena School
